Description: Arginine and proline metabolism is a human pathway that describes the co-metabolism of arginine, proline, ornithine, citrulline, and glutamate. In this pathway, arginine is synthesized from citrulline which can be derived from ornithine via the catabolism of proline. Proline is bio-synthetically derived from glutamate.
Synthesis of arginine occurs primarily in the intestinal-renal axis in the epithelial cells which produce citrulline. With the help of the Proximal tubules, citrulline is converted to arginine. Ornithine is also found in the epithelial cells and is used primarily to synthesize citrulline and arginine.
Both proline and arginine are incorporated into proteins. Arginine can serve as a precursor for the synthesis of creatine.
